Premier, the Christian broadcaster, is on the AM band, along with Viva, the women's station. The campaign for a London-wide frequency has fallen on deaf ears. Radio selection is being broadened with four new stations due on air this spring. Compare GLR, Kiss or JFM, whose signals are pumped out by 1,000 watts of power, with Choice FM, which has been allocated just 50 watts. It should be a major success story but reception is patchy so celebrations today are muted. Unfortunately only "cop out" bears any resemblance to what's happening on London's airwaves Choice FM 96.9 celebrates its fifth birthday today. With a regular audience of around 200,000, it works as a catalyst for the hundreds of small black businesses struggling to find an appropriate platform to display their wares.
"Turn on.. tune in... cop out" is the slogan used by a leading jeans manufacturer to sell its version of what's hip in the metropolis.
